Tour 1: Zengwen Reservoir

Zengwen Reservoir is located at the southwestern part in Taiwan and has been operated since 1973. It is the largest reservoir in Taiwan by capacity. In 2009, Typhoon Morakot struck the catchment area of Zengwen Reservoir. Triggered landslides and intensive surface erosion due to continued heavy rain resulted in sediment inflow. The reservoir lost ca. 91×10⁶ m³ storage capacity. Under the “Special Act for Management of Zengwen, Nanhua, and Wushantou Reservoirs and Stabilizing Water Supply conditions in Southern Area” renewal work and conservation measures have been in progress. Besides, Zengwen Reservoir has been certified as environmental education site in 2012.

Tour 2: Yongkang pumping station for flood

(This tour will start at 13:30 on November 9, 2016)

1/3 flood-prone area of Taiwan is in Tainan City. Flooding often occurs by heavy rain associated typhoons or thundershowers because of insufficient effluent capacity. The Tainan City Government has spent a large volume of budget in a series of engineering and non-structural measures to protect the residents and reduce flooding risk. The Yongkang pumping station is model project which integrates 3 concepts: (1) interception of wastewater for preliminary treatment to improve water quality; (2) flood control to reduce flood peak; (3) water reuse to provide Tainan Science Park additional water resource.
